One of the loveliest public spaces in Winnipeg and a "must see" for any visitor, The Forks is an expanse of riverside property in the heart of downtown Winnipeg. A meeting place for thousands of years, it is the city's most popular gathering place, attracting nearly four million visitors each year.
That many visitors generate a lot of garbage, a lot of toilets being flushed, a lot of exhaust from cars and a lot of expensive power to heat and cool all buildings. It’s also a lot of money going up the chimney, out the window, down the drain and into the garbage. So, 'The Fork' have come up with TARGET ZERO as a way to be good to the environment while saving money.
With TARGET ZERO, 'The Fork's are working hard to reduce their impact on the Earth’s climate, thereby taking every step to implement innovative and responsible environmental practices. These are some of their eco-projects: Geothermal Heat Pump System The Forks Market has replaced its old HVAC system with a closed vertical loop geothermal heat pump system.
Biofuel From French fries to tractor fuel, they’ve converted used oil that comes out of our restaurants’ deep fryers to fuel that powers equipment at The Forks in to biofuel. Biocomposting They are currently composting materials from their full and fast food service restaurants and fresh food producer at The Forks Market.
Water Use By changing the way they use water, The Forks Market alone saves three Olympic-sized pools of water every year. Recycling An effective recycling program is now underway throughout The Forks.
Future Projects Because Target Zero is ongoing, they are constantly looking and reviewing for more ways to change their impact on the environment.
This is work in progress....
